What is a remote wire used for on a car amplifier?

A car amplifier has a remote wire to power itself on and off, without having to do it yourself manually. A remote wire is usually colored blue and connects from the car's head unit remote wire to the car amp terminal. Having a remote wire is important because you save your car's battery life because it automatically tells the car amp to shut down when you power off your car head unit.
