The Nokia n96 is just like the Nokia n95, although the audio sounds different. The audio sound quality of a Nokia n95 sounds plain and it has a lack of detail, but is it the same with the n96? When Nokia created the n96, they included a dedicated audio chip on the circuit board; this is to enhance music sound quality. The Nokia n96 has stereo speakers placed on each side of the phone, to enhance the stereo surround sound effect further.
I have the Nokia n96 myself as my portable multimedia computer and i wanted to test the audio sound quality of the stereo speakers inside the mobile phone. I played a music file that is properly encoded into mp3 at 320 kbps to make the sound test fair and the sound was loud, but there was not much sound quality like i heard on the Nokia x6 and 5800. The sound was loud without any question, but there was a lack of bass and mid range sounds. I tweaked with equalizer and still the sound was tinny and flat because there is distortion heard when the volume reaches above 80%. Overall, in my opinion the sound quality is not that good from the stereo speakers that are built in the phone and is not a music phone for a audiophile.
I also tested the sound quality produced when you connect a decent pair of earphones into the Nokia n96. The sound produced through the earphones is excellent and is not tinny at all! The detail and clarity of music is excellent when using earphones, but i can't give all the credit to the dedicated audio clip because i do have a expensive set of earphones that can enhance the sound quality on any music device. The Nokia n96 also includes a stereo widening feature, to enhance and make the stereo sound like the music is live. Overall, in my opinion the sound quality is much better using earphones and with the loudness feature turned off, rather than using the stereo speakers that are built in the mobile phone.
If you want a music mobile phone that is loud and has great sound quality, you will not get it from the Nokia n96. You can't really blame the Nokia n96 because it was not really designed for music demands. If you want a mobile phone for music with great sound quality, then i recommend you get the Nokia n91 or a Nokia 5800, Nokia 6233, Nokia x6.
