How To Perform The Fan Mod On Your PS2 Slimline Console / Make It Spin Faster

The PS2 slimline console is more prone to overheating than the PS2 fat style console. This is because the electrical components are more cramped together, to make the PS2 console size much smaller. This causes the GPU and CPU to easily overheat because there is not much room inside the console for the unwanted heat to escape. This can be a problem if you are a nonstop gamer and game for endless hours because overheating can cause the game to randomly freeze during playing it. Also overheating causes the lifespan of the PlayStation 2 to gradually decrease, since the heat puts stress on internal electrical components.

The PS2 slimline has a internal cooling fan placed on a heat sink inside the console. This allows the cooling fan to extract heat from the heat sink and blow it out from the rear vents of the console. Although Sony designed the cooling system very well, the speed of the cooling fan is not set to its maximum rpm from the factory. This limits the ability of the cooling fan to extract hot air out. So there is a modification that you can perform on your PS2 slimline, which will allow the fan to spin faster constantly. This will help it shift more heat out of the console in less time. This fan mod involves you to open up your PS2 slimline console and will void your warranty, so bear that in mind before performing it!

1) Power off your PS2 console by holding down the 'Power/Reset' button for 4 seconds. Then unplug the power cord and AV cord from the rear of the console. Unplug any controllers on memory cards inserted into front of the console.

2) You will need to dissemble your console apart. So you will need to obtain an 'F'lat' head screwdriver, to remove the plastic and rubber tabs that cover the screws and a 'Philips' head screwdriver, to open the screws that hold the console together. To begin with, turn the console upside down, so the PS2 'Logo' is facing downwards. Now you will numerous plastic and rubber tabs, which are found on the bottom side of the console.

3) You need to remove all of the tabs, so using a 'Flat' head screwdriver, pry them out one by one. Then using your 'Philips' head screwdriver, unscrew all the screws and place them into a container, so they can't get lost so easily.

4) Turn your PS2 console around and grab the top part of the left side of your PS2 with your hands and gradually pull it towards the right. Once the top part of the PS2 is completely removed, placed it down to one side.

5) Now that the insides are fully exposed, you will see the cooling fan located at the bottom left of the console, placed near a 'Silver' color heat sink. The fan will have three wires, 'Red' (12 volt power), 'Black' (ground) and 'White' (sensor). The white wire is the one that you will need to disconnect. This will trick the cooling fan to think that the console is overheating and it will run it at full speed all the time. So get a pair of 'Scissors' and snip the 'White' color wire in the middle. Once you have done that, you successfully done the fan mod to your console.
