How To Test a Speaker If It Works With a 9 Volt Battery

By physically looking at a speaker, you can't tell for sure if the voice coil is blown out. Most people would test a speaker using their stereo amplifier to see if sound comes out. The most convenient test method actually would be to use a 9 volt battery. You can hook it up to the speaker and immediately determine if the speaker works or not.

1) Obtain a fresh '9 Volt' battery. Fresh because you want it to have the full 9 volts to push the speaker cone. Using a dead battery or one that is already been used might not have enough current for this test. Therefore the speaker cone could not move or pop, even though the speaker is fine, providing you with inaccurate results.

2) Turn the speaker upside down. It will have two metal spade terminals on the back, placed above the magnet. Connect two pieces of electrical wire to both positive and negative terminals, by twisting the copper around the terminals.

3) Obtain your 9 volt battery, hold one wire to the 'Positive' terminal on the battery, using any of your fingers. Then hold the other remaining wire and touch that onto the 'Negative' terminal. If the cone moves up and down, every time you touch the wire on the battery terminal, the speaker is confirmed working. If the cone doesn't move at all and no pop sounds are heard, then the speaker is proven to be faulty.
