The Sega Dreamcast console has an optional VMU read out screen that you can insert into your controller. The VMU unit has an small screen that some games use to display certain information that is game related. The VMU operates on a small circular shaped 3 volt 'CR2032' battery, which is easily replaceable. This type of battery is known for providing poor battery life with the VMU cartridge. If you notice that your Dreamcast makes beeping sounds when powering on, it is telling you to change the dead battery.
1) Look at the back of your VMU cartridge. You will see a small sized plastic cover with a small Philips head screw inserted into it. Underneath this plastic cover is the battery's location. Using a 'Philips' head screwdriver, unscrew the small Philips head screw. Place the screw into a small container to prevent it getting misplaced later on.
2) Now remove the plastic cover away from the VMU device. Then tap the VMU onto your hand, the battery will pop out itself. If the battery struggles to come out, use a 'Flat' head screwdriver to help pry it out from its housing.
3) Remove your new replacement battery from its packaging. Then with the writing side facing up, place it directly into the battery holder. Ensure that you insert the battery the correct way in, if it is in the wrong way it won't work.
4) Replace the plastic cover back onto the VMU cartridge and reinsert the tiny Philips head screw. Then use your 'Philips' head screwdriver to tighten it up. Make sure you don't tighten the screw too tight because it will cause problems later on when the battery becomes dead again.
