1) Its all about the ohms of the coil. The lower the ohm is rated on the actual coil the less electrical resistance, the more amps its going to pull from the 18650 battery. The higher it is the less smoke but this to some is an advantage because it increases the battery life on your ecig. For example a low 0.2 ohm coil is going to give you more vapour and thicker clouds than a 0.5 coil.
2) The more watts the more bigger clouds. Now each battery mod usually has a digital screen that shows you the amount of watts its currently set at. You either have the option to increase or decrease it manually using the buttons on the device. The highest watts ecig is going to give you the most smoke, but you will need to ensure that the coil is rated for it in the specs. You can usually research about this stuff online on the manufacturers website.
3) The type of e liquid you are using. There are two main different types of e juice, one being PG propylene Glycol and VG being the other as Vegetable Glycerine. They are usually mixed together in a ratio to provide a balance of the two. Try to look at the labels of the bottle to see if its more VG based because it will produce thicker smoke. PG based liquids are more for throat hit and not really for cloud chasers.
