The PS3 dualshock 3 controller contains a battery back fitted inside it that is rechargeable. It provides power and wireless functionality without the need of any wires always being attached. After regular use, the lifespan will slowly get reduced to a point were it no longer holds charge. If you notice that yours on a full charge becomes dead under 10 minutes with no USB cable plugged in, you will need to remove the battery pack and replace it. You could also possibly get an extended upgrade replacement than the factory one installed for even better battery life performance if you want.
