If you own a old style ps2 console and the disc tray won't open, then you can't eject it. This means that the ps2 console is useless because you can't insert and remove discs from the drive. The disc tray failing to open is a common occurring problem with the fat style ps2, that is why Sony designed a slimline model, which allows you to insert and remove a disc manual, without the use of complex electronics.
Solutions on how to fix this problem:
1)When you press the eject button the unit, does the blue colored ejected light, on the eject button come on? If the light doesn't come on, then the make sure all the ribbon cables that connect to the disc drive and firmly connected into their sockets. Loose ribbon cables that connect into the disc drive, are most likely to make a weak connections, which can prevent the disc tray to not open. To get access to the ribbon cables, you will need to dissemble your ps2 console.
2)Check the motor that ejects the disc tray and also check the belt that drives the eject mechanism.
2)If that ribbon cables, belt and motor are not the problem, then the disc tray can be damaged. Underneath the disc tray, there is a teeth sort of shape that grips hold of the eject and open disc drive mechanism. Sometimes the teeth get broken, due to excessive ware and tear, which can stop it from opening and closing. To find out if the teeth are damaged on your disc tray, you will need to dissemble the console and remove the top cover from the disc drive mechanism. Once you have done that, you will see to screws on the left hand side, that are holding the tray in place, using the correct sized screwdriver, remove them both. Once removed, you can remove the tray and examine the teeth. If they look warn out and damaged, replacing the disc tray will solve the problem.
