Most of time the software has locked up which is why you are seeing this kind of unusual behavior. What you need to do is carry out a quick factory reset and you should be good to go on your next journey.
1) Ensure that your TomTom sat nav is powered on.
2) Find the reset location. It varies on different models its either on the top or the bottom. Its a small hole that is always labeled as 'reset'.
3) Find a pointed object that you can push into the hole. Insert it in and hold it for 5 seconds and then remove it.
