What size speaker wire do i need for wiring subwoofer?

Many people get really confused when it comes to finding out which gauge speaker wire is need for your bass system. Some people think that the bigger and thicker the wire is the more power you are going to get well that is incorrect.Speaker wire gauge depends on how many rms watts you are running to your subs, tweeters and speakers.A good example i can give you is if you are running a basic 100 watts to your speakers using a car amplifier and you have got 2 gauge speaker wire to hook them up with then it is a waste of time and your money. That is because that extra thickness of wire is not necessary because your not running big watts and your woofers will be fine with the basic 16 gauge wire that  is much cheaper.

Thicker wires are less resistant as a electrical conductor and can handle more abuse and more voltage.People sometimes think that thicker thicker wiring can give better sound quality, well the only way to find out is to go and by some of the shelf.Smaller and thinner wires are more voltage resistant and usually give out poorer sound quality if you compared it to the bigger wire.

The general rule is if you are running more than 250 watts of rms then you should use no more than 14 gauge wire.If you are running more than 500 watts of pure rms power then you should buy at least 8 gauge wire.If you are running more than 1000 watts of rms then 5 gauge or lower is recommended. So my point is don't buy thick expensive wire if you are not running big watts because you are just wasting your money on something that you do not need.
