How To Lower The Tuning On a Ported Subwoofer Enclosure

The great thing about a ported design subwoofer enclosure is that you can adjust the tuned frequency of it; this is by increasing or decreasing the length of the port. In general, the longer the length of the port is, the more deeper bass you are going to achieve from your sub. If you like loud sounding bass, you would increase the tuning above 40Hz for maximum spl with little sound quality. If you want to feel bass and make the subwoofer play lower bass frequencies, an ideal tuning would be 30Hz. Before adjusting the length of the port, make sure the subwoofer is recommend by the manufacturer, to make sure it can play the frequencies that you want to tune the box. Usually this kind of information is stated in the user manual of the subwoofer.

Thanks to modern development, other people have made it easier for people like us to work out the exact length of the port according to your chosen bass frequency. I found a few websites that helped me tune the port on my own ported subwoofer enclosure and i found them quick and easy to use. These port calculators tell you the exact length on what you need to cut off, or increase on the port, according to your chosen frequency. I have listed them below; this is so you can save time and let the calculators calculate the port length for you:
