How To Make a Ported Subwoofer Box Sealed / Car Audio

Ported boxes tend to gain more SPL and sound more boomy, if compared against a sealed type of enclosure. The main difference between the two is that ported boxes have a plastic 'Port' tubing that is fitted into the box. This port will have a specific length and diameter, which will determine the HZ frequency tuning for your box. If you currently have a ported box for your subwoofer, you want the bass to sound more accurate and punchy, having the characteristics of a sealed box, then i have a solution for you. You can block the port, so no air can be pushed out, making it work just like a sealed box does. This solution contains no actual DIY modifications, so your box will not be destroyed in the process. So you can easily revert back to a ported type of enclosure when required.

1) Open the trunk and locate your subwoofer box. Look around all of the different sides of the box to locate the port. The port will look like a plastic pipe that will be fitted directly into the MDF. Once located, roughly determine how wide the diameter of the port is.

2) Get a couple of unused towels or socks and role them up into a ball and place them directly into the port. The number of towels/socks required to cover it up completely will vary depending on how wide the port is.

3) Once you have done the stuffing, flip the box the other way round, so that the port is facing downwards on the trunks interior carpet. This will cover up the alterations you have just made and prevent it looking ghetto!
