You can connect a wired headset into the Xbox 360 controller to chat to your friends on Xbox Live. The headset has a microphone attached onto it, which allows your voice to be transferred over. It also has a small speaker, which allows you to hear other people speak online. If you assume that your friends are having difficulty trying to make out what you are saying, the mic could be faulty and not working. Before you buy a new replacement headset, you should check if the current headsets microphone is problematic. Since you don't want buy a new headset, when the first headset was not the cause to the problem. This testing method also works with all nonofficial and official wireless or wired headsets.
1) Plug in the headset jack into the bottom of the controller.
2) Press the 'Guide' button found in the middle of the controller an go to 'Messages'.
3) Then select 'Create New' and select a random friend from the list.
4) Then select 'Add Voice' and record a short message using the headset. This audio the microphone picks up will be recorded in the audio clip.
5) Once recorded, click the 'Play' button beside the recording and see if you can hear clearly what you have just said. If you can without any difficulty hearing what you just said, the mic is working. If you can hear crackling or hardly hear what you have just said, the mic is not working and is faulty. So you might want to consider buying a replacement one to overcome this issue.
