If you require more volume and better bass response, you can connect a Fiio E17 headphone amplifier inline to your ipod. The amplifier works by taking the input signal from the audio device and processing it back into your headphones. There are two ways you can connect a Fiio E17 to your apple device. The most common way is to use a double ended 3.5mm patch lead. This type of connection will not provide you with the best sound quality. This is because it doesn't bypass the internal amplifier on the ipod. The other option would be to use a L9 lineout cable. This provides the best sound quality because it bypasses the internal amplifier, therefore reducing distortion and clipping levels.
1) Purchase a Fiio 'L9 Lineout Dock Cable' online. This cable will contain a 3.5mm jack and a special type of ipod connector.
2) Connect the 3.5mm jack from the cable into the 'Input' socket on the amp.
3) On the other remaining side of the cable, connect the ipod 'Connector' into the socket found at the bottom of the apple device.
4) Connect the 3.5mm jack of your headphones into the 'Output' socket on the amp.
