One main advantage of installing a hard drive onto your PS2 fat console is that you can install full PS2 games onto it. Once installed onto the HDD, you can they play them without having to insert the original game disc into the console. The lifespan of the laser inside the disc drive will last longer because it will no longer be used to read game discs. You will also notice that loading time will be reduced and games will load far more quicker. But you can't install games just like that. You will need to have installed the 'HD Loader' software on your memory card to make it possible. Along with a hard drive attached onto a network adapter kit into the back of your console.
1) Ensure that the memory card with 'HD Loader' installed on it is inserted into 'Memory Card Slot 1'. Then press the 'Eject' button to power on the console and open the disc tray.
2) Insert the game disc of the PlayStation 2 game you want to copy onto the hard drive. Then press the 'Eject' button again to close the disc tray.
3) Press the 'Reset' button on your console, so that it can enable itself to boot into 'HD Loader'. Shortly, you will see the HD Loader interface appear onscreen on your television.
4) Select the 'Install option from the main menu. Follow the onscreen instructions and proceed with the installation of the game onto the hard drive. Once you have installed it successfully, select the game title and press the 'X' button on the controller to play it.
