If you are having problems with the USB ports on your laptop or PC to recognise your memory sticks or usb devices, chances are they could be malfunctioning from dust and dirt. This gets built up onto the gold metal contacts on the pins inside the USB port if you have not used them in a while. There are four pins inside every USB port, if one pin becomes clogged with dust, then it will not be fully functional and will cause connections problems. Now there are various ways you can clean the USB ports on your laptop, the best way is to use no cleaning solvents.
1) Shut down the operating system on your laptop.
2) Get a small toothbrush and scrub rapidly into the USB port you want to clean. While you are doing this all the dirt particles are being removed.
3) Get a vacuum cleaner, switch it on and place the plastic nozzle right next to the dusty USB port. This will suck all the dust you have scrubbed off.
