The PlayStation 2 console uses a laser lens to read data from the game discs. If you are recently getting disc read errors on screen, it is most likely because the lens of the laser has become dirty. This can happen if the discs you insert into the disc drive are really dusty and dirty. The PS2 slimline has a flap to access the disc drive. So you can get to the laser without having to open the console, like you do with a fat style console. This making more more convenient to perform the cleaning maintenance.
1) Hold down the 'Power/Reset' button for 3 seconds, until in goes into 'Stand mode' The led indicator will change from the color 'Green' to 'Red'.
2) Press the 'Eject' button on PlayStation 2 console to pop open the flap. Then remove the game disc from the disc drive.
3) You will see a square shaped metal thing, with a blue lens, this is the laser. So obtain a bottle of 'Rubbing Alcohol' because you will require it to clean the lens.
4) Now obtain a 'Cotton Swab' and pour a small amount of cleaning solution onto it. Using the wet side, slowly clean the laser lens upwards and downwards. Please don't scrub really hard in circular motions because it will cause it to get scratched.
