If you want to achieve the best sound quality in your car audio system, you will need to stop all air leaks that could possibly occur in the subwoofer enclosure. This is because air leaks will cause the bass to sound less tighter and punchy. You will also be able to hear the air rushing out of the gaps in the box at high volumes. Overall, its something you want to prevent happening or at least decrease the chances of it occurring. If you are unsure about whether your sub sealed or ported box is prone to this, you can test it for air leaks to spot them and seal them up with silicon glue right away.
1) Play a 25 Hz bass test tone on your car stereo.
2) Set the volume on the headunit to maximum level before clipping and distortion levels.
3) Now open the trunk and gain access to the box.
4) Run your hands over the carpet. You will notice any leaks if you feel air rushing out of any holes on the back or sides.
5) Mark all the ones with white chalk. That way you know where they are when it comes to sealing them up later on at home.
