What most people do is turn off the PS3 system using the power button, found at the front of the console. When you do this, the PS3 will place itself into stand mode, so technically the PS3 is still powered on. The only difference the console is none operational in that mode, you can't play games or do other stuff. While in standby mode, the PS3 will still consume electricity, since the power supply will still obtain power from the mains wall socket. Sony has placed a mains power switch on the back of the console, to allow you to cut off the power from the mains. This will save you money on your electricity bill and will prolong the lifespan of the PSU board. Please note that only fat PS3 models have this feature, slim and super slim don't have it integrated from the factory.
1) Power down your PS3 console. Hold down the 'Power/Reset' button for 3 seconds. Doing so will place the PS3 console into standby mode. The green led will now change to a red color.
2) Locating the mains power switch. Turn around the PS3 console and look at the back for the location. You will find all sorts of connectors back there. Look near the socket where the power cord goes into, above it you will see a flick-able switch.
3) Using the mains power switch. It will have two positions labeled on the switch. The 'l' position represents 'On' and the 'O' represents 'Off'. To turn off your PS3 console from the mains, flick the switch into the 'O' position. To switch on your PlayStation 3 console, flick the switch back into the 'l' position.
