How To Refurbish Xbox Cooling Fan Thats Not Working

The original Xbox console has an cooling fan placed right at the back to allow the hot air from the GPU and CPU inside the console to extract the heat outwards. This will help keep internal operating temperatures down and prevent overheating problems to occur during long gaming sessions. Since the original Xbox is fairly old now, most of them have a dusty cooling fan that will need cleaning at some point. You can clean the Xbox cooling fan usually without having to fully disassemble your console apart. The fan size is quiet a unique size so finding a exact replacement of the same kind is going to be hard to find. So its certainly worth taking the time and effort to cleaning it to see if its improves airflow and keeps the noise down. This is also work for the Xbox 360

1) Unplug both power and television cords from the back of the console.

2) You will see the cooling fan vents at the back next to where the 2 pin power goes into.

3) Get a can of compressed air from your local computer PC repair shop. Attach the supplied straw and blast out the air directly into the air vents. The pressure of the air will blast off dust and dirt on the plastic fins and motor structure.

4) Using a household vacuum cleaner suck up any remaining bits of dust and dirt. This is by placing the plastic nozzle directly onto the fan vents.

5) Reattach your cables and enjoy your quieter console!
