How to fix a PlayStation 2 disc read error

The Sony PlayStation 2 is a great console back in 2001, but after a while of constant use and play the ps2 struggles to read DVD game discs. The disc read error is a common fault for Sony consoles and it usually occurs on the older fat style ps2 consoles. The main reason why Sony made the slimline models were to resolve the disc read error issues that we saw in the older style models. The reasons why the PlayStation 2 can have a disk error problems can be sometimes because of the laser lens being dusty and dirty. Dust and dirt on the laser lens can prevent the laser to properly operate and function as it should when it reads disc's. Cleaning the laser lens usually repairs the laser and makes it function like brand new, but there is no guarantee it will solve the problem.

Here below is a simple solution that will show you how to clean your PlayStation 2 laser lens. Cleaning the laser lens involves opening up your console. Doing this will void you warranty so open up the console at your own risk!

OK before you start the cleaning process you will need the following things below:

*A medium sized Philips head screwdriver
*A small sized Philips head screwdriver
*A flat head screwdriver
* Rubbing alcohol
*A lint free soft ear bud

Remove the wires, memory cards and controllers etc. Ok firstly you have to assemble your PlayStation 2 console to get access to the disc tray mechanism. Watch this video below because it will show you how. This video below shows you how to dissemble the complete console, so stop watching the video after he remove the top cover from the PlayStation.

Once you have successfully opened your ps2, you will a plastic cover like in the image below, that is above the disc tray itself. Using your small sized Philips screwdriver remove the 4 screws holding the cover in place. Once you have removed them all the plastic cover remove it and put it out of the way.

You will now see the laser lens exposed, make sure you don't look directly in the laser beam because it is a class 1 laser. If you see any excess dust around the disc tray area then get a tissue and wipe it clean.

The next step is to get your rubbing alcohol and pour some onto the either side of the ear bud. Once you have done that then gently wipe the laser lens clean gently. Remember not to clean it in a circular motion as this can cause the laser to get scratched which can destroy it all together!

Once you have cleaned the laser put the PlayStation 2 console back together in its original shape and form. Plug in you console and test to see if you have fixed the disc read error.
