How To Make a Computer Power Supply Unit Run Quieter

A computer power supply unit, also known as a PSU is the component that converts the standard 240 volt mains to 12 volts and below. It provides power to all hardware fitted inside the case, motherboard, hard drive, disc drives, graphics card etc.. If you notice that your power supply unit is making lots of loud noise it is either because of the worn out fan bearings or a cheaply built cooling fan. If you are looking to make a computer power supply quieter without actually replacing it, you could just replace the current fan with a Zalman 80mm silent fan. All you simply do is disassemble the PSU and swap out the existing cooling fan with a better quality one.

1) Ensure that your PC is powered off from the mains and is unplugged. Remove the 3 pin power cord from the back of the PSU. Leave your computer switched off for 30 minutes to make the operation safe. This is because there is still electrical charge stored in the capacitors. Touching these by accident will keep your a nasty surprise shock!

2) Remove the two screws found at the back of the PC tower that hold the side panel in place. This is by using the correct sized screwdriver. Then push the side panel to the left to release it. Place the side panel out of the way on the floor.

3) Look at the rear of the case at the top. You will see four screw holding the PSU in place. Unscrew all four of these screws using the appropriate sized screwdriver. Then unplug all of the connectors that are going to the motherboard and to other devices. Then remove the PSU from the case.

4) The PSU will have four tiny screws placed in each of the four corners at the bottom. Unscrew all four screws using the correct sized screwdriver. They are very small, so place them into plastic container lid so they don't get misplaced. Lift of the metal cover from the PSU unit.

5) The fan will be held in place by four screws. You will see them at the back of the power supply unit near the fan grill. Unscrew them all, followed by unplugging the fan connector and removing the current cooling fan.

6) Obtain your new replacement silent fan, line it up with the screws holes and the grill. Then reinsert all four screws in and screw them tight using a screwdriver. Then insert the fan connector into the socket. You have now successfully done the modification, all you have to do is follow these instructions in reverse order and reassemble it back together.
