The Sony PS3 Dualshock 3 controller is powered by an internal rechargeable battery. You can connect a USB charging cable to charge up the battery pack. So you don't have to buy replacement batteries like you do with the Xbox 360 controller. To make the battery life last longer on your PlayStation 3 controller, you can turn it off manually and still leave the console on. This can be convenient if you leave your PS3 switched on all the time to download PSN content. You also increase the lifespan of the battery pack because the number charge and discharge cycles are reduced.
1) During gameplay or on the XMB menu, hold down the circle shaped button with the PlayStation logo on it. You can't miss it! It is located right in the middle of the controller.
2) You will now see a list of different options displayed onscreen. Select the option called 'Turn Off Controller' using the d-pad and press 'X' button to confirm it.
3) The controller will now power itself off. The red color led indicator will no longer appear.
