How To Open a PS2 Expansion Bay Slot On Console

What is the expansion bay used for on the back of the PS2 console?

On the rear of your PlayStation 2 console, you will see a 'Expansion Bay' slot, located at the right hand side. It uses a plastic cover to hide the inside of the bay, to prevent it getting dusty and dirty when not in use. If you remove the plastic expansion bay cover, you will see a very long slot that goes all the way down to the front side. This bay can be used to install a additional hard disk drive or a network adapter to go online. Only the bulky versions of the PlayStation 2 console have this feature, the PS2 slimline doesn't have it. This is simply due to the fact that it is very compact, so space is a limitation and it already has a built in network adapter from the factory.

How to open the PS2 Expansion Bay Cover?

1) Press the 'Eject' button to pop out the disc tray. Then remove the game disc from it and reinsert it back into its plastic case. This is because you don't want to be handling the console when the disc is spinning, as it can cause the game disc to get scratched.

2) Turn the console around so the rear side is facing you. You will see a rectangle shaped plastic cover that says 'Expansion Bay' cover in the middle of it. This will be found right next opposite side of the cooling fan. You will need to remove this to get access to the inside of the bay.

3) Above the plastic 'Expansion Bay' cover, you will see a small slot to help you get a good grip of it. No screwdrivers or tools are required. Simply insert your finger nail into this area and push it upwards. Then grab it from both sides and slide it in the outwards direction to remove it.
