Many people start to get confused when it comes to tune your amplifier and a subwoofer enclosure design.Basically on a car amp hz tuning means what frequency do you want your bass box to play. Most car amps like Allpine,Kewood,Kicker, mtx and Jbl can be tuned from 30-200 hz of ranges some do require a screwdriver to adjust the tunes.Bass notes are under a 100hz,and none bass notes are above 200hz.It all depends on what kind of bass do you like?Do you like low, deep thumping bass or do you like loud boomy bass?
If you like loudness which is know as spl, then tuning around 40hz to 45hz will give you more sound than feel. This tuning range is too high for daily driving, but its best for competition. But remember don't just think that if you tune your amp for example to 42hz,your sub will play not at 42hz's if you have not peaked out your box..You have to have the sub box tuned to the certain frequency the same as the amp,or else it will sound muffled. There are many volume calculators that do all the maths work for you and all you have to do is the DIY.
A ported box is better because you can tune the port to any frequency at any time. All you have to do is buy a new port and cut it to length. But for a sealed box you have to either buy or build a brand new box,or try to make it smaller or bigger,by using some extensions of mdf. When dealing with the tuning port area and length make sure that the port length is correct to your chosen frequency.
If you prefer sound quality, you need to tune in the low end between 30,31,32,34,35,36,37,38,39 hz range. The general rule is the lower the tuning the more you can feel bass and get more truck vibration and flex and set more car alarms off.I recommend the best tune is at 35hz because you get spl and quality. The more lower you go the more power your going to need to be running,so think about getting a amp that can handle more rms watts.
