How To Adjust Bass Boost Setting On a Car Amplifier

Car amplifiers usually have a special bass booster feature that allows you to increase the amount of bass at a certain frequency. The bass booster setting is setup around the 40-45 Hz region from the factory. This is to provide a more amount of boomy and punch in your music. If adjusted correctly, you can increase the amount of SPL in that frequency region. Most people think that this feature is a volume control and set it to the maximum level without understanding the concept of it. This is not the proper way to do this and can cause your subwoofer voice coil to get damaged due to clipping the outputted signal. Follow the instructions to set this feature up correctly by ear.

1) You will need to find out what Hz frequency the bass booster option boosts. This can be identified by reading the manufacturer technical specification online in a PDF or a provided paper based user manual.

2) Burn a bass test tone that is at the same frequency as the amplifier bass boost setting onto a blank CD using burning software such as Nero.

3) Insert the CD into your car stereo. Then play the bass test tone track at a low volume level.

4) Go to the back of your trunk and use a flat head screwdriver to turn the bass booster option all the way down.

5) Increase the volume on the car head unit to its maximum level before clipping. Then head back to your trunk and slowly increase the dial. When you hear distortion, slowly back off the dial allowing you to fine tune your audio system for a cleaner sound.
