How To Make a Computer Case Fan Run Slower & Quieter

If you have multiple computer case fans installed into the PC tower, it can make it sound just like a loud hoover or hairdryer taking off. If the computer tower is placed fairly close to your desk, the loud fan noise will eventually become annoying to listen to. You can try to replace the existing cheap fans with better higher quality ones to eliminate this problem. The other option would be to hard mod the wiring, so that the fan runs at a slower RPM speed. Computer fans are usually connected to receive  the standard 12 volts from the PSU, making them run at full speed. You can make an alteration to the wiring, so that it only gets 7 volts, so it spins slower and sounds quieter.

1) Ensure that your PC is 'Powered' off before working with the internals. Also place an 'Antistatic' wrist band onto the wrist of your arm.

2) Remove the 'Screws' that hold the side panel in place, using the appropriate sized screwdriver.

3) Position the 'Side Panel' towards the left to remove it from the computer tower.

4) Unplug the 'Male Molex' connector from the 'Female Molex' connector found on the PSU.

5) Remove the pin in the 'Male Molex' connector that goes into the 'Black' ground wire on the 'Female Molex' connector. Reposition the pin you have just removed into the last position at the end, so that it connects directly with the 'Red' 5 volts wire.
