Yes it is technically possible to charge your ps3 controller via a Sony PlayStation 4 console. This is simply because all the battery pack inside the gamepad needs is 5 volts down a usb cable. Any usb port located on any device, including a computer or laptop has the ability to provide a 5 volts output. This is since it is part of the wiring pinout standard. To charge your ps3 controller on your ps4 unit, no special adapters or modifications need to be made to the on board configuration settings. It will automatically recognize the connection and will begin to charge it up right away since its officially supported by Sony.
1) Attach the small end of the charging cable to the top port of the Dualshock 3 controller.
2) Connect the other big end of the cable into any free usb port on the front of the console.
3) Switch on your PlayStation 4 console. You will notice that four led lights will start to flash on and off on the gamepad.
