How To Test a Car Battery Voltage With a Digital MultiMeter

A car battery is used in all types of vehicles to start up the engine and provide power to all electrics. If you have problem starting up your car, you will assume the car battery is the main cause. You can use a digital multimeter to measure the current voltage of the car battery you are having problems with. This will give you an accurate indication whether or not the car battery has enough voltage to start up the car. From there, you can then identify if you need to charge it up or replace it with a new car battery to solve your problem.

1) Locating the car battery. If it is placed in the front, pop up the hood to access the car battery. Push the hood upwards and use the rod to hold it in place.

2) Disconnect both positive and negative terminals on the battery posts. This will prevent the car battery to provide any current to the cars electronics, providing you with more accurate results.

3) Power on your multimeter and set it to read in volts. Connect the probes to the multimeter, touch the red probe onto the positive battery post. Then touch the black probe onto the negative battery post. Keep holding the probes in the same position for 15 seconds.

4) Look at the digital display on the multimeter to see what the voltage read out is. If the read out is around 9.7 volts or more, the battery is in good condition. If the readout screen shows less than 9.7 volts, then it doesn't hold its charge and needs replacing.
