What are the PS2 3000 vs 5000 Series Differences?

There are two different types of categories of the older style PS2 console, the Sony PS2 SCPH 3000 and 5000 series. Both almost look identically the same from the outside in terms of aesthetic design. But actually there are quite some differences between the two.

The main differences between PS2 3000 VS 5000

1) Has a quieter fan. The 3000 series batch of consoles had very loud cooling fan inside them. People use to install quieter replacements and perform a modification to overcome this. The 5000 series has a quieter cooling fan without reducing the rpm speed of it, since its made from better quality parts.

2) It has an built in IR sensor. This is placed in the middle between the power/reset and eject buttons on the left near the metal Sony logo.  So you don't need to connect a additional infrared adapter plug into the controller port.

3) No i link connector. This was not so high in demand during the peak season of gaming for the PS2 back in 2003. This was because online gaming was more popular at the time. This is because it didn't require two consoles to be connected directly to each other and be in the same room. So it was removed to save costs and instead add more features that people would find more useful.

4) Stronger laser lens. The first 3000 series PS2 consoles were prone to the common disc read error problem or not loading games at all and being stuck on the browser screen. They used a higher quality laser assembly in the newer model and adjusted the power to tweak it for optimal performance. This is because it was seen as a problem to Sony because they were getting lots of returns from their customer of consoles that didn't read games after 6 months of use. This was most likely because the laser was not strong enough for continuous use, since most people at the time used it has an household DVD player.
