A CB radio is a two way radio communication device that allows you to transmit and receive voice information. If you notice that your CB radio is not picking up any signal at all and you can hardly hear anybody speak on most channels, use the following tips to improve it.
1) Check the CB radio PL259 antenna plug is firmly connect into the back of the rig. It should be pushed in all the way so the metal pin slots in and the metal screw cap that goes over the connector should be screwed tightly. Loose connections are not easily spotted and are very common to cause simple signal problems.
2) Open up the PL259 connector plug and look out for any loose or bad
solder connections. If you notice that the cable fitting is slightly
loose the solder is breaking off inside. You will need unsolder
everything and resolder it back in for a far more stronger connection.
3) Check the coax cable. Look out for any rips or tears on the insulation shielding. Also look for any copper oxidation green gunky stuff on the cable. Either way if the coax cable your using is bad quality and is degraded over the years, the signal will leak out into the atmosphere and not go 100% into your radio.
4) Make sure your antenna is positioned as highest as possible. The higher you place it the more potential there is in receiving better reception because there are fewer obstructions. Obstructions such as trees, public transport and shops can block signal.
5) You could be off frequency. You could be using a band of channels that nobody is using in your local area. Always try other bands to see what you can catch and not just try always on one set of frequencies. The most common ones that the most widely used are the FM and AM ones.
6) Get your rig tested out by somebody. You could have the perfect setup in the world, but if your CB radio has developed a fault on the receiving side you are not going to get any sound regardless. Take your unit to a local CB radio repair shop specialist and tell them to test it for you. While your there, you might as well get a peak and tune done and make it more powerful.
