If you currently experiencing boomy kind of bass in your car and you want to get the tight punchy kind of sound, there are number of ways you can actually achieve it that i have come across. With car audio, getting it to sound right to your expectations can be experimental. I will explain today how to get tight bass from your subwoofer from all the possibly ways that shops use.
1) Switch to a sealed type of box if its in a ported one. Vented box enclosures tend to be more louder and boomy making them perfect for rap songs. However, if compared against an sealed box they tend to lose sound quality slightly and the tightness of the bass seems to be reduced.
2) Make sure its air tight. Leaks can cause an effect on how tight your bass sounds. This can occur if the box is not correctly sealed inside with glue silicon all around. I suggest to 100% ensure an air tight box that you remove the sub and go over the lines inside the box.
3) Insert Polyfill stuffing. Adding this material tricks the sub into thinking its placed in a bigger box, in terms of higher cubic volume. Play around with the right amount until you get the right sound you are looking for.
4) Adjust the Low pass filter on the amp. Sometimes it can be set too high and be mistaken for a volume control. In fact its job is to filter out any frequencies that a subwoofer is not capable of playing. This is usually anything from the 80HZ range. Try adjusting it between 60 - 80 Hz to find the optimal tuning point.
