A subwoofer playing out of phase can have a major impact on sound quality and overall performance. No matter how much you spend on your audio, if the speaker is out of phase its going to provide you with limited bass output regardless. Most car amplifiers have an built in switch on them that allows you to instantly change the phase output. Therefore clearly changing the way it sends the signal out. There are a few ways to tell if a subwoofer is out of phase, but here is one main one to consider.

1) Play a bass heavy track with reasonable volume.
2) Look at the cones. Do you see a push and pull effect motion? If yes, then the subwoofer is not in correct phase.
3) Flick the switch on the amplifier between normal and reverse. The one that sounds the most better to your ear will provide you an accurate answer in terms of the correct phase direction positioning.
