If you are after a few more extra horsepower then you can do certain modifications and maintenance to your desired lawnmower. This will benefit your grass getting cut far more quickly, saving you time and a faster go kart if you thinking of using a lawn mower engine for your project.
1) Change the spark plug. If the spark plug is worn out the fuel will not get proper combustion. Adding a fresh new spark plug will provide the best possible connection for igniting the fuel.
2) Change the oil. If the current oil is old and muddy the engine is not going to run smoothly to its optimal performance. Changing the oil and ensuring that its topped up all the time will ensure a smoother operation, you will also notice that the engine will run a lot more quieter.
3) Clean the air filter. If this is blocked with leaves and grass its not going to get sufficient airflow into the lawn mower engine. I suggest you unclip it from the air box and give it a quick wash under the tap.
4) Change the carburetor to a bigger one. The more bigger it is the more air and fuel is going to your engine. Get a bigger powerful one from a higher power lawnmower hp engine and make some modifications to fit it on. Remember don't get a overly sized one because you can run the risk of damaging the pistons.
5) Fit a turbo kit. This is not the cheapest route by far, but it will provide the most possible power out of your lawn mower engine. You could get a used motorcycle turbo fitted and experiment with it to make it work with your setup.
