How to make a paper cone speaker into a subwoofer

Many people have large 8 or 10 inch speaker laying around there house and want to use it as a subwoofer to produce loud, low sounding bass, without actually buying a subwoofer. Below is a simple guide that will explain the procedure to turn your normal speaker into a hard hitting sub, it should be easy.

A speaker plays usually mid rage sounding frequencies and if it has a tweeter, it will play high sound frequencies. To turn a paper cone speaker into a subwoofer, you will have to prevent it from playing mid and high range frequencies this can be achieved, by using a low pass filter. A low bass filter will send bass sounding frequencies to the speaker, transforming it into a subwoofer and cut out high and mid rage sounds. You can get the low pass filter feature on graphics equalizers, crossovers and car amplifiers. I recommend you get a car amplifier for your speaker and power it from a spare computer power supply. Why?, well because a car amplifier has a built in low pass filter and you can power your woofer using the amp, so everything is sorted,  as you don't need any other audio equipment.

Once you have the low pass filter setup for the speaker and the speaker doesn't have a enclosure, then the speaker will not sound like a subwoofer. Normal speakers don't have specifications to tell you what the dimensions on the mdf wood have to be and how much cubic volume is required to gain the bass frequency. So using your imagination, construct a large sealed enclosure, the larger, the more low the bass is going to sound.

Once you have a amplifier to power the speaker with a low pass filter setup on it, and a enclosure, you have transformed a normal speaker into a subwoofer and it should sound great.
