The gain level has to match the car head unit and amps voltage, for optimal sound quality and performance. Too much voltage into the car amplifier can lead to sound distortion, a jagged curve on a frequency wave, which can be seen on a oscilloscope, which can cause poor sound quality and could cause damage to the voice coil in speakers or subwoofer, that you are driving on your car amplifier.
