The longer you leave your car stud up for, the more chances of the battery post terminals to become corroded. This is because no power is getting consumed by the car battery, resulting in oxidization to occur. If the battery posts have corrosion on them, they will cause bad electrical connections, since the conductivity becomes weak. This means that your car will fail to start up and will have electrical related problems. Look at your car battery, if you see any white deposits around the battery posts, then its suffering from corrosion. This problem can easily be resolved, all you need to do is clean it off and the car battery will be good as new.
1) Remove the cables that are attached onto both battery posts. You will need to remove both of them to prevent any electrical shortage happening during cleaning. Removing them is straightforward, simply loosen the nuts on the clamps and push them off.
2) Obtain some baking soda. Baking soda is widely used in cooking and also works great for removing any existing corrosion. The best cleaning ingredient would be to using baking soda. I have tried out vinegar and cola and it doesn't work as well. So pour a sensible amount of baking soda onto both positive and negative battery posts.
3) Then get a toothbrush and wet the brush using tap water. Then using the toothbrush, scrub really hard onto the battery posts in circuital motions. This will buff off all of the corrosion and remove any unwanted deposits in no time.
4) Once you have cleaned both posts of the car battery, obtain a dry rag and rub it around the posts. This will wipe off all of the baking soda mixture and water left from the toothbrush.
5) Now replace the cables that you removed earlier on back onto the car battery. Ensure that you connect them with the correct polarity. If you connect the cables the wrong way round, you will cause a short in the wiring.
